Over 25 Shots Fired at Kapil Sharma’s Canada Café — 2nd Attack in a Month
A disturbing escalation of violence at the popular establishment in Surrey, British Columbia.
SURREY, B.C. — In a chilling turn of events that underscores growing concerns about organized crime and celebrity safety, the newly opened Kap’s Café, a restaurant in Surrey, Canada, owned by popular Indian comedian and television personality Kapil Sharma, has been targeted by gunfire for the second time in less than a month. The latest attack, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, saw an unidentified assailant fire over two dozen shots, leaving behind a trail of shattered glass, six visible bullet holes, and a disturbing threat of further violence.
The Second Attack: A Targeted Escalation
According to reports, the shooting took place around 4:30 a.m. local time on Thursday morning. Residents in the Newton neighbourhood were reportedly awakened by the sound of multiple gunshots, prompting calls to the Surrey Police Service (SPS). First responders and forensic teams arrived to find the windows and facade of the café heavily damaged. Fortunately, no staff members were injured during the incident, although some were present inside the building at the time. This incident comes just weeks after the first shooting at the same location on July 9, shortly after the café’s grand opening.
Gang Claims and the “Mumbai Next” Warning
The most alarming development following the attack was a social media post that quickly went viral, allegedly claiming responsibility on behalf of the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The unverified post, which has been widely circulated, was made by a man named Goldy Dhillon, an alleged associate of the gang. The message, written in Hindi, ominously stated, “Jai Shri Ram. The firing that happened today at Kapil Sharma’s Kap’s Cafe in Surrey has been claimed by Goldy Dhillon and the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. We had called him, but he did not answer, so we had to take action. If he still doesn’t respond, our next operation will be soon in Mumbai.”
This direct threat to the comedian, who resides in Mumbai, has sent shockwaves through the Indian entertainment industry. The mention of Mumbai, a city known for its vibrant film and television scene, has put both police and celebrities on high alert. Indian security agencies are reportedly working to verify the authenticity of the post and its link to the attack, while Mumbai Police have been put on notice.
A Link to Salman Khan?
Further compounding the motive of the attack are claims from within the Bishnoi gang itself, which reportedly link the shooting to Kapil Sharma’s recent collaboration with Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. An audio clip, allegedly featuring a gang member, claims the violence is a direct consequence of Sharma inviting Khan for the launch of his Netflix show, “The Great Indian Kapil Show.” The gang has had a long-standing feud with Salman Khan, stemming from a blackbuck hunting case in 1998, a crime that is considered a grave offence by the Bishnoi community. The audio clip reportedly warns that anyone associated with Khan will be targeted, vowing to “go to any extent necessary to kill them.”
The First Attack and Its Controversial Claims
The latest shooting comes on the heels of the first incident in July, which also had its own set of disturbing claims. In that instance, the firing was claimed by Harjeet Singh Laddi, a Germany-based operative of the banned Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terror group. Laddi, who is on India’s National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) most-wanted list, claimed the attack was in retaliation for alleged “derogatory remarks” made about Nihang Sikhs on one of Kapil Sharma’s past television shows. The motive behind the first shooting remains unconfirmed, but it highlights the complex and often murky web of extortion and threats that surround celebrities and business owners of Indian origin in Canada.
The Surrey Police Service has not officially confirmed the motive for either attack and is investigating all angles. However, the presence of different groups claiming responsibility for separate incidents at the same location within a month suggests a deeply troubling trend.
Police Response and Community Concerns
The Surrey Police Service is actively investigating the incident. Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton of the SPS confirmed that investigators are looking into potential connections between the two shootings and other similar incidents of extortion and violence targeting South Asian businesses in the region. Houghton also urged the public to be cautious about believing everything they see on social media, emphasizing that official information would be released as the investigation progresses.
The community is rattled by the repeated acts of violence. The café is situated in a mixed-use building, with a daycare nearby, a fact that has heightened public anxiety. The Surrey Mayor, Brenda Locke, along with other officials, had visited Kap’s Café after the first shooting to show solidarity and a united front against violence. Kapil Sharma had shared a video of this on his Instagram, thanking them for their support. This second attack, however, indicates a brazen disregard for public safety and law enforcement.
Implications for Celebrity Safety
The targeting of Kapil Sharma’s establishment is part of a larger pattern of threats and violence against high-profile individuals in both Canada and India. In the past, Punjabi singers Karan Aujla and Gippy Grewal have also been subjected to similar attacks in Canada, with alleged connections to organized crime. The recent incident against Sharma, particularly the direct threat to “next operation will be soon in Mumbai,” represents a significant escalation. It not only puts the comedian’s own safety at risk but also sends a clear message to other public figures, creating an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. The incident has triggered discussions on the need for enhanced security measures for celebrities and a more robust crackdown on cross-border criminal networks.
